THE HIVE MIND DREAMS OF SLEEPING
SOLO EXHIBITION, TINNEY CONTEMPORARY
October 15-November 26, 2022
The phrase came to me as I was working on the painting which now carries that title; this happens often as I work—phrases or words floating up from my subconscious and across the screen of my conscious mind. THE HIVE MIND DREAMS OF SLEEPING resonated with me intuitively on multiple levels. Symbolically, to dream of sleep can represent polar-opposite scenarios: a feeling of peace rooted in the belief that all is right and well versus being ignorant of/ignoring facts; that we live in a world where we have easy access to such a volume of information and can communicate with relative ease to basically anyone (and at any time) can also yield polar-opposite feelings of exhilaration versus overwhelm. During the collective and individual moments of overwhelm, are we dreaming of sleep, or sleeping to dream?
The overarching theme and narrative in this body of work is an observation on What We Worship. Throughout human existence there has been an inclination to worship an Other; we worship gods, nature, ancestors, money, power, stature, celebrity, material things, technology, a beloved, and even our individual selves.
The predominant palette used in this body of work is symbolic: blue, of the spiritual/air/the eternal and transcendent; earth reds and browns, the corporeal/the temporal and earthly; coral, love and protection; green, life and renewal. The recurring theme of the cup/vessels is representative of the spirit, intuition, and the feminine.

Tinney Contemporary solo exhibition “Aspic and Ambrosia” November 1-December 31, 2020
Artist Statement:
The overarching themes in the body of work represented in Aspic and Ambrosia are our perceptions of nostalgia and how we relate to one another. The title of the exhibition evokes a particular period and way of life that is highly romanticized, and reflects--in my imagination--how some things translate fairly well over time (ambrosia), while other things do not (aspic). Elements in each painting are metaphor for relationships: shapes range from diaphanous to opaque, rough to smooth, slick to matte, precise to organic; edges collide, overlap, barely miss, graze, float or are tenuously connected; the palette is ethereal to earthy, and watery to fiery. The stylistic shift that occurs from painting to painting is intended to symbolize how dramatically a narrative can be changed with small, simple adjustments. As I have worked on this body of paintings, I have imagined each of them as symbolizing different conversations occurring over the course of a dinner party, stylistically representing the personalities, body language, nuances, interests and intentions on display.

This series of 10” x 8” works on board was made as I worked on the larger pieces that make up Aspic and Ambrosia, with the paint left on the palette at the end of a painting session. I thought about some of my favorite places to visit as I painted, and titled after those locations: Los Osos, Mohegan Bluffs, Block Island, Morro Rock, Morro Bay, Joshua Tree, Pacific Palisades.
